Helping Your Child Through a Toothache

Dentist Blog

If your child has a toothache then you want to take them in to the dentist as soon as you can get an appointment. However, you may not have immediate access to a dentist and this means you will have to help them with the pain until you can get them an appointment. The tips below will help you to control their pain until you are able to get them in.

Look at their teeth

If you can, you want to see what's going on with their teeth and causing them to hurt. Use a flashlight to look inside their mouth and see what the problem is. If you see food caught between their teeth that may be causing the pain, use floss to remove it.

Keep their mouth clean

The cleaner their mouth is, the less chances of food particles getting in cavities or other small areas where they can cause more irritation. Along with gently brushing their teeth and using mouthwash before they go to bed, they can also rinse with warm salt water a few times a day to kill off more bacteria. This can help prevent certain conditions from worsening and the warm salt water can also relieve pain.

Use clove oil

Clove oil is good for taking away a toothache. Dip a piece of cotton in the clove oil and have your child hold it on and around the tooth that hurts. You do want to prepare your child for the small sting that can come with the clove oil. While the sting only lasts a few seconds, it can be a shock if they aren't expecting it.

Use ice cubes

If your child is old enough to bite on an ice cube without you worrying about them choking, then have them use a medium sized piece. They will put it on the affected tooth and gently bite on it until it melts. This is a simple way to numb their tooth temporarily.

Use toothache gel

Read the instructions on toothache gel and if your child is old enough for it, you can apply a small amount on the tooth that's hurting them so they can get some instant relief from the pain.

Now that you know how to handle your child's toothache, you will be in a better position to help them feel better until you can get them in for an appointment with a local dentist, such as Ottawa Street Dental.
